5 Outfits with Neutral Winter Family Photo Color Schemes (already in your closet)

This is a Black Friday post…but it's not about shopping. Hmm. Let’s talk about winter family photo color schemes. The holidays always make me want to dress in classy red or festive green, but when it comes to family photos, I prefer a more neutral color scheme so that I can enjoy the photos outside of the Christmas season, too. Anyone else?? On top of that, I know this is a season when so many momma’s are spending lots of time and money making memories without a lot of budget left for new outfits. So let’s pull some neutral outfits together that may already be hanging in your closet.

Quick note: I have a confession that I still beat myself up about. I did not schedule newborn photos when our second son was born for several reasons. One of those reasons was feeling like “I have nothing to wear.” Usually, I would have had a photoshoot planned before I even gave birth. However, that pregnancy was a doozy for me, and I have so much regret for not just walking into my closet and choosing a neutral outfit so I could have the memories of that sweet baby face forever. I still have the 2,000 photos I took of him on my iPhone, but it’s not the same as professional memories. I’ll never let small details like “I need a new outfit” keep me from making newborn photos happen again.

My hope is that this post can inspire some mommas out there to schedule a photo session. Make it a priority, even if you’re not “feeling” it right now. Chances are, you’ll look back in a few months or years and wish you had carved out a little time to capture the very season that you’re in now. Maybe it’s not newborn life for you; maybe all of your babies are in elementary school right now and you think you have plenty of time to schedule photos next year. Well, in the words of Darius Rucker, it won’t be like this for long! Walk into your closet, choose a simple outfit that makes you feel put together and take those photos.

Here are a few snaps of how that advice turned out for me:

My favorite winter family photo color scheme =

brown, black & cream

Brown Dress + Beige Knee High Boots

The perfect outfit for winter family photos in a studio or indoors!

Cream Chunky Sweater + Satin Mini Skirt + Beige Knee High Boots

It would be easy to throw a coat on for an outdoor family photo session!

Brown sweater + Beige coat + White jeans + Brown Booties

Outdoor winter family photo friendly!

Black Coat Over Gray Dress + Black Cowboy Boots

Simple black and gray is a classy look for a white studio photoshoot.

Black Coat Over Cream Midi Skirt Set + Black Cowboy Boots

I would wear this for a winter outdoor photoshoot at the park!

So here is what I’ve learned from this little exercise: neutral are the unsung heroes of family photos—they’re versatile, timeless, and often already hanging in your closet! With a little layering, accessorizing, and strategic mixing, your everyday basics can transform into a polished, photo-ready look. So, before you head out shopping, take a second look at what you already own—you might be closer than you think to one of the most timeless winter family photo color schemes!

See you next week!
